What Determines Lead Time?
Current production queue: Custom manufacturers schedule orders sequentially. High-demand periods (post-market, Q4) mean longer waits.
Fabric availability: In-stock fabrics ship quickly; specialty orders or COM add time. Some fabrics quote 8+ weeks from mills.
Customization complexity: Standard dimensions process faster than heavily modified pieces requiring engineering time.
Capacity: Small batch manufacturers have finite capacity. This ensures quality but limits surge capability.
Typical Timelines
For Hendricks and similar quality manufacturers:
- Standard pieces, stock fabric: 6-8 weeks
- Modified dimensions: 7-9 weeks
- COM (after fabric arrives): 6-8 weeks
- Complex sectionals: 8-10 weeks
Add fabric lead time if ordering from mills.
Planning Strategies
Order early: Place upholstery orders as soon as design approval happens. Upholstery typically has the longest lead time of any furniture category.
Confirm fabric availability: Before finalizing specifications, verify your fabric is in stock or understand mill timing.
Build in buffer: Add 2 weeks to quoted lead times for project planning. Delays happen; padding prevents installation crises.
